Recommendations for a wired router? - Carnos Jax - 09-19-2019
Currently running an AirPort Extreme in my office as a wired router for our wired network. Though we occasionally have need to use its wireless capabilities. But office is not centrally located, and other end of house receives a weak signal. Thinking of moving the AE to a more central location, so will need to replace the router functionality for our network. Don’t need wireless capability. Assuming a good wired router is cheaper than a wireless equivalent. Any recommendations? Will even look at used options, as we’re not looking to spend much (less than $40 if that’s reasonable). Once I know what model to look for, I can hunt on eBay or Amazon.

One more thing, would preferred to be a gigabit router, but it doesn’t need more than two ports

I'm using a TP-Link Archer C7 running DD-WRT as my home router, it does ac1750 WiFi but you don't need to use that, it has Gigabit Ethernet on the WAN and the 4 LAN ports.
I had bought one factory refurbished on Amazon from the seller Outlet Digital, for $49.95, but they are also sold out now.
I also bought one factory refurbished at Microcenter for $39.99, but it was in-store only and seem to be sold out now.

The seller Outlet Digital has the Archer C8 for $39.99 refurbished (I assume Factory Refurbished like the C7 I bought from them). It's also Gigabit WAN and 4 LANs, but I have no personal experience with it.

TP-Link AC1750 Smart WiFi Router - Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Internet Router for Home, Works with Alexa, VPN Server, Parental Control&QoS(Archer A7) is a good choice. This is an updated version of the C7 and sells for $57.99 on Amazon. Sometimes on sale for $50. At the router setup screen, you can disable wireless.

Most wireless routers have wired ports. 4 minimum.
And just a router, not a modem/router? Your modem doesnt already have wired ports?

$40 for a wired router is a tight budget.
Some MicroCenters have refurb TP-Link C8 1750's for $40 though.
fyi, if you want to use DD-WRT, Tomato, etc. check the mfr's. website first.
I discovered with TP-Link and others, they no longer support non-OEM firmwares
as a part of their 'built-in' security schemes.
I made a features checklist for my new router search:
Gigabit
min. AC2900 MU-MIMO simultaneous dual-band
Broadcom chipset: DD-WRT supported
Dual Core Processor
512MB RAM
USB 2 & 3 ports

Actually, I have a router or two I need to part with. I think they have wired ports. I can take a look at see if we could make a deal.

How about a wireless signal booster for the other end of the house? Then you can leave the Airport Extreme where it is.
