I don't notice all that many at night. In the old days it was a slaughter every night. Are there fewer bugs? Are the car aerodynamics made to avoid bugs on the windshields?

Fewer bugs. I have noticed the same thing myself, and our anecdotes are supported by data, per vision's link.

I've noticed it too. There's a lake that we drive by 3 or 4 times a year, between eastern and western Washington state. From early spring through late fall, we used to get pelted with bugs when we drove by it, but not so much the last few years. Some research points to the drop in bug population as a cause of decline in birds.

In the zeal to better our lives through chemistry, the bugs we don't want develop immunity, the good bugs are taken out by collateral damage.

It's nothing like it was 30 years ago. Not even close. 30 years ago, after driving 100mi, you HAD to clean your windshield. These days, I hardly bother at all.

Maybe when the vehcles became more aerodynamic, only the heavier critters end up on the windshield? The lighter they are, the more apt they are to be carried upward with the wind?
Right now, I have bugs from at least 10 states on the front of my Pacifica, because wifey & I are on a western US bucket list trip.
