My friend in Little Rock rides it all the time between there and Dallas and Houston to visit his daughters and usually gets tickets for $1. That's $1. I can't find them that cheap but he has the knack. They don't go to that many cities but the good thing is there are no or few stops.

Cheapest price for me is $5 between Sacramento and San Francisco.

Cheapest round trip that I see is $32 and that's about 3 miles.

Not much selection. To get a ride to Philadelphia (and it's overnight) I'd have to get to Boston, 2-3 hours away. And then I'd have to drive in Boston (if you've never done it, I hope you remain blessed in your ignorance). Safer and easier to just drive to Philadelphia and I wouldn't have to pay to leave my car somewhere.
Also i don't want to go to Philadelphia, really. It's just one of the few options.

He has a Windows computer and iPhone. I don't know which one he uses.

Yes, I've made a few trips on Megabus. And BoltBus, which Greyhound started to compete with them.
The $1 seats (IIRC there's a booking fee as well) are the first few sold when booking opens, probably 90 days or more before departure. They're merely a marketing gimmick. But even day-of fares are typically quite low.
As with the low-cost airlines, though, at those prices there's no redundancy built into the system. No station, no one to ask when the bus will arrive. In the smartphone era that's more tolerable, but (in the flipphone era) I once spent three hours sitting on the curb under a Milwaukee freeway overpass hoping the bus would eventually show up. It did. "We were late leaving Minneapolis" was all the driver said.

There have been a number of reports over the years of how some of the online ticketing, registration and sales sites determine prices based on the cookies, they read, your browser and whether you have a PC or Mac. Some of these have found that the prices offered were higher if you checked from a Mac.

If this is the case, it's weird that the friend would only say it's $1 without giving the whole story.
