And so it begins: 1st blizzard of season to wallop northern US with up to 3 feet of snow - DP - 09-26-2019

Parts of the Northwest and southern Canada are bracing for a potentially 'historic' snowstorm that will unleash heavy snow, fierce winds and record cold — and meteorologists say the timing of this storm will add to the dangers.

Hazardous travel conditions and power outages will result as blizzard conditions will unfold in some areas, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Missoula, Montana, warned that the storm has the potential to be "historic" due to its occurrence so early in the season. Life-threatening conditions in the backcountry and damaging winds were among the dangers the NWS office highlighted in a tweet.

As the storm evolves, temperatures may plummet 50 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) or more in some locations.

In Glacier National Park, a weather pattern change has already begun ahead of the heavy snow expected to arrive late this week. The Great Falls NWS office tweeted that it was 25 F at Logan Pass in the park at 9:25 a.m. Thursday morning. The national park announced temporary closures on Thursday due to the impending storm, and “camping not advised” signs have been placed in St. Mary Campground, which will remain open.

Looks like it’ll miss us. We may get a light frost next Thursday but nothing more.

First frost here at my house in Anchorage this morning. No 3' of snow in the forecast, yet, but the show is capping the mountains to the east, working its way lower and lower.

The important thing to remember when discussing climate change is that climate and weather are two separate entities.

Weather is the state of the atmosphere pertaining to things like wind, moisture, temperature and more that occur on a day-to-day basis. Climate, on the other hand, is the average weather in one place over a long period of time.

Temps are expected to drop into the 40s here, maybe into the 20s overnight. That was fast.
