I'm guessing that the phone didn't have a screen lock and he just look through the contacts or for looked at what was the phone number for the phone at the time it was lost.

like with the apple watch you can always bring up emergency/medical info on an otherwise locked phone. maybe she listed herself among her emergency contacts. maybe we should all do that. right now i have my son and my best friend listed.
