Drobo large volumes - davemchine - 09-30-2019

I have a drove 5D with five 6 TB drives for a combined capacity of 21.71 TB. It is split into two volumes currently and I would like to combine it into one volume. Is a reformat still necessary? The information on the Dropbox site is very difficult to find.

Do you have a backup?

Re: Drobo large volumes - Sarcany - 09-30-2019

1. Yes. You'll need to remove the existing volume and make a new one to make one with more capacity.

2. If you're still on old firmware, you may be restricted to a max of 16TB for any volume. You may need to update the firmware before making the new volume.

Thank you. I will start hard drive shopping today. Where is the sweet spot these days?

8tb externals (shuckable) are commonly available for $130. I see them pop up on slickdeals.net every couple of days. 10tb models are less frequently available for $160 shipped a few times a year.

I don't even bother with bare internal drives anymore -- despite the longer warranties -- the prices just don't make sense in my opinion, unless $$ is not a consideration.

I've bought three 10T WD Elements/Easystore externals this year, $140.

Shuck 'em and stuff 'em.

I just missed another such sale three weeks ago.

Why are externals cheaper than internals? Since I have 6TB drives now I think it makes the most sense to upgrade to 10TB drives.

Externals aren't tested to the same specs as 'branded,' e.g. "WD Red Drive" for NAS use, etc.

Often the same hardware, same factory - just not the same vetting/performance guarantee.

and not the same warranty.
