Remember when the ipod was released - dotman - 11-30-2006 and everyone at the old place panned it. the cry was "boring". who would of thunk it. dot. Re: Remember when the ipod was released - iaJim - 11-30-2006 I bought one the first week. It still works fine. I should buy the shirt that says, "I had an iPod before you knew what one was." Re: Remember when the ipod was released - Pam - 11-30-2006 I too bought one the first week, still have it, and it still works great. I don't remember the panning, I was thrilled. Re: Remember when the ipod was released - microchip13 - 11-30-2006 I remember, not really though. I didn't learn about the iPod until I saw one at compusa. I have the thread from MacRumors bookmarked though. It makes for a good laugh. Re: Remember when the ipod was released - mrbigstuff - 11-30-2006 still rockin my 5 gigga. will not die, and i'm glad, since it's pretty well built. the headphone jack is showing some wear though but been that way for a while Re: Remember when the ipod was released - Kramerica - 11-30-2006 Yeah there were so many predictions of failure on Slashdot and the like. People were mad that Apple had promised to reveal a "revolutionary" new product and they didn't think it lived up. I'm still amazed at how ubiquitous its become, and how the simple choice of including white earbuds makes its popularity so noticeable. Re: Remember when the ipod was released - michaelb - 11-30-2006 I remember those threads on dealmac, and I don't remember everyone or even that many people panning it. It was regarded as another beautiful Apple design. My memory is that the main complaint was that it was way overpriced for an mp3 player. So it was another overpriced and beautiful Apple product like the cube. People also objected to the ipod as a niche product and a distraction from Apple's core business (from the pretty miserable g4 offerings at the time). Re: Remember when the ipod was released - onthedownlow - 11-30-2006 I remember both sides...and personally when I'd see the ~$500 price tag... or was one version actually $599 one time too? ...and thinking that I'll wait. I'd rather spend just a small fraction more and pick up an iBook instead. Re: Remember when the ipod was released - Seacrest - 11-30-2006 At the time, I remember being laid off, laid up and more concerned about trivial things like if I was ever going to walk again (not the same as before) and where my next meal was coming from. I do remember thinking that 5GB would not be enough to hold the 12GB of mp3s I had at the time (and this was before I started ripping a lot of the CDs I actually own), and that eventually when the price comes down and the capacity goes up, I'd like to have one of those things. I got my first iPod -- a ten banger -- as a Christmas gift the next year, and I was thrilled. I still have it, along with a 4th gen 20 and 1st gen nano. Re: Remember when the ipod was released - RAMd®d - 11-30-2006 and everyone at the old place panned it. Not true. There some at dealmac (yeah, I said it) who liked the idea, and a few of us who wanted to see one in person before making any kind of a call. (The same thing happened when the G4 iMac was leaked by Time (Canada). Boo, hiss, Apple is doomed!) And some of those who did pan it are probably here. I remember those posts, negative for the most part. The high price ($399) was the *biggest* of the complaints, all ending in "Apple is doomed! WTF are they thinking" rhetoric. And I don't remember many (any actually) positive posts about the design. The 10G came out later, at $499. After seeing one in person for the first time, I left the AS with it. Couldn't help myself. I had to get a new battery for it, but it's still doing well. And I'll get another battery when that's gone. I also got a Gen 3 with the four illuminated buttons above the scroll wheel, and am listening to it at the moment. That's the one so many people claimed was black, seeing it backlight in the ads. It needs a new battery as well. The daily driver is a 60G photo. A "video" iPod is next up, but I'm waiting for the next version, to see what it offers. Yeah, there was a lot of doom and gloom, and it was not dealmac specific. The same thing would have happened here. Because people is people, and a lot of them suck. |
