A little ditty, 'bout Jack & Diane -
Two american kids growin' up in the heart land.
Jacky gonna be a football star
Diane's debutante in back seat of Jacky's car.

Suckin' on chili dog, outside the taste freeze
Diane sitting on Jacky's lap got his hands between her knees
Jacky say "Hey, Diane, let's run off behind the shady trees
Dribble off those bobby brooks let me do what I please" saying:

Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of living is gone, sayin'
Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of living is gone
They walk on

Jacky sits back collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean
Well man there and Diane, we ought to run off to the city
Diane says, "Baby you ain't missing a thing"
but Jacky says:

Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of living is gone
Oh yeah - they says - life goes on
Long after the thrill of living is gone

So let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt, come and save my soul
Holdin' on to sixteen as long as you can
Change is coming round real soon make us woman and men

Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of living is gone
Oh yeah - they says - life goes on
Long after the thrill of living is gone

A little ditty, 'bout Jack and Diane -
Two american kids doin', best they can

The line "life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone" runs through my mind all too often.

I find it kind of amazing how a then 31 year old guy could understand that life is so full of disappointments and dreams that never pan out.

Maybe the thrill of living had already left him?

The song wasn't autobiographical...

"According to Mellencamp, "Jack & Diane" was based on the 1962 Tennessee Williams film Sweet Bird of Youth."

"Sweet Bird of Youth is a 1959 play by Tennessee Williams which tells the story of a gigolo and drifter, Chance Wayne, who returns to his home town as the companion of a faded movie star, Alexandra Del Lago (travelling incognito as Princess Kosmonopolis), whom he hopes to use to help him break into the movies. The main reason for his homecoming is to get back what he had in his youth: primarily, his old girlfriend, whose father had run him out of town years before."

“Pink Houses” is my favorite, even though JM doesn’t know what “a face that would stop a clock” means.

I like "Check it Out" except for the chorus, which. I think is just dumb.

But I do have a thing for the sound of an accordion and violin playing together!

And there's a woman in the kitchen
Cleanin' up evenin' slop
And he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin'
I can remember when you could stop a clock"
Lyrics found here

I know the saying but always interpreted the lyrics to mean, "I look at your beautiful face an all time stands still for me."

Yeah. You can make time stand still.

I remember trying to win the Pink House in MTV's "Paint the Mutha PInk" contest. I desperately wanted to win that house.
