So, I'm running some "hypothetical" trips for late November on Expedia... hunting for deals to a few locations I want to go (Italy and Thailand, mostly this time).
In both places, I'm finding quite a few hotels list the "amenity" of "Linens not available"???
So, is this a new thing? Having to bring your own linens? I would have just shrugged it off as an aberration if I hadn't spotted it in BOTH Italy (Naples, and Rome) and Thailand (Bangkok), and in more than just a couple hotels. Some that are rated "three star" places, too... not just scuzzy youth hostel type places.
I know that it's common for youth hostels to bring your own "linen bag", which is a sewn shut bedsheet like a sleeping bag... but this is the first time I've seen actual HOTELS doing this.
Aberration or the new, hip, trendy thing?

No linens is typical for hostels. I've never seen this for decent hotels though. This used to be common for travel on hiking trails in Europe years ago. The inn or cabins would provide blankets and pillows, traveler would use the sleep bag.
You can buy sheet sleeping bags on Amazon. Some have a pocket for the pillow. I bought one for my son, who travels for school activities and has had to deal with some crappy linens.

I think it's becoming de rigueur in air bnb's, so maybe it's bleeding down into regular hotels. That would suck, I admit. So much for travelling light.

Is the expectation that you would bring a "sleep sack", like a hostel?

I ran into this in Jakarta, where only a bottom sheet was provided. No toilet paper, either.
I finally decided the target market (this was the Red Door chain) was migrant workers rather than tourists. Folks who come to work in the big city and stay for weeks if not months at a time.
On the other hand, I haven't seen a hostel that didn't provide linens since the 1980s.
Not sure where you're headed in Thailand, but I've been pleased with the Nantra chain for budget lodgings. Mom-and Pop Thai places often have "mattresses" that are really hard (by Western standards). In Bangkok, I like the Nantra Silom.

I had never thought of it, but I wouldn't trust the hotel's word that the linens had been cleaned properly.

Here's one example... (not one of the ones I was looking seriously at, as it's too far outside of Rome, but it's a convenient example of a decent looking place, but under amenities "No bedsheets available".

For Hostels, I'd understand... but, as cheap as this is, I'd still expect sheets, even if they do what other hotels have started doing which is "limited housekeeping"... you don't get the bed changed every day. I'm totally fine with that, but no sheets at all? Sorry, I kinda need a place to SLEEP in the hotel, LOL.

I've been thinking about returning to Bangkok. Spent a week there in 2016, but it was during Songkran, and a lot of stuff was closed for three days, so I feel like I have unfinished business there. I'd love to get up around Chiang Mai as well. Right now, it's "anyplace that's once-in-a-lifetime-cheap" is my goal. Wasn't really planning on traveling for the rest of the year, but if any of my desired destinations are super-cheap... I'd just go for it.

Besides the Nantra Silom, I can recommend KC Place Hotel Pratunam in Bangkok. Very close to an Airport Rail station, and not far from Pratunam Fashion Mall and even the Siam Square stuff.
In Chiang Mai, I was very comfortable at Sabai House.
I use Agoda to book hotels whenever I'm visiting Asia, and I've also had very good luck with it in Europe, South America, and even the US.

Thanks! Appreciate the tips! We stayed just off Sukhumvit Soi 2 last time (and yes walking by Nana Plaza to get to the MRT station was... interesting... ). I've seen Nantra Silom in the Expedia listings. I'll pay more attention to it.
