Instacart question - wurm - 04-23-2020

I'm thinking of giving Instacart a shot. But here's the thing. Pretty much the only reason I'm considering it, is that I can't be driving all around trying to find one item I've been looking for (no, not toilet paper or hand sanitizer). So I'm creating an order of that item and several other things that we can use, just to justify the expense of using Instacart. But if they don't have the main thing I want, it's pretty much a waste of money for me to use them. The other stuff is just filler.

Is there any way of letting them know that if they don't have item X, then don't bother with the order at all?

Can you just fill the entire order with just 3-4 of that one item? So if it's not in stock, they won't send you anything.

Well, that's a thought. Except I already have 6 of them in my basket (Egg Beaters Southwestern Style), but that doesn't hit the threshold for delivery. And there are only two stores around here that even carry them during normal times.

I suppose I could try to add some other "I might get lucky if they have it" items to complete an order. I'll have to look into that, as your concept seems sound.

At least for Costco, there is a field to put in any special requests or notes about the order, so that might work but I have not tried.

Can you just not go out and get them?

I would use Peapod if it's available in your area. Instacart is completely non-responsive to a fraudulent bill on my credit card.

I had this happen when I ordered delivery from Hy-Vee. Most of the items I ordered were out-of-stock, so I wound up paying a $10 delivery fee for 2 boxes of cereal and 1 other smaller item that I can’t recall!

I tried that last weekend. One of the stores was wiped out of pretty much everything in that section except for real eggs. The other place (where Instacart would be shopping) had a line of people out front being let it a few at a time. I parked, saw the line, then left. If I knew they had them, I'd have happily waited, but I didn't want to wait for a half hour only to discover they had none. It might have been a timing thing, but I don't know.

We've used Peapod a few times in the past (non-Covid times) and it's been fine, but it's only affiliated with Stop and Shop, which doesn't even carry the item.

And that's why I asked. Thanks.
