Vinyl plank flooring - Ombligo - 06-07-2020

We want to redo a second bedroom and were considering engineered hardwood but then Vinyl Plank flooring was suggested. It looks pretty good and installation is an easy DIY project. With hardwood, tile or carpet, we would have installation costs.

Being an old geezer I tend to associate vinyl with pool floats and plastic. Is anyone familiar with this type of flooring? Anything to say about it - good or bad?

It can look quite nice and there are even waterproof options. It is supposed to be very durable.
If you like the way it looks, go for it.

I installed vinyl plank in my basement a year ago. I've also installed other engineered plank floors in the past. Where the Pergo engineered that I put in years ago was a smooth "picture" of wood, the vinyl plank had a wood or tile "texture" to the face. You need at least a few tools to get it done, tapping blocks/bars to snug up seams, handsaws to cut (although a table saw and a power miter saw make it faster).

The biggest thing I noticed with vinyl plank, is that even more than engineered wood, each major flooring store/big box hardware store has a different brand. And they're all different thicknesses. So you have to find the color/pattern you like, and then if you're doing two adjoining rooms with different product, you're probably locked into that one manufacturer/store for selection.

I installed Pergo laminate planks in 2 rooms back in 2008, with excellent visual and functional results. It was easy and fast to do.

We had it put into our master bath last fall. We like it. Installed price was about $300 from Home Depot.

I've been in three hospitals lately and they all have put down vinyl or were putting it down. I would think they came to a conclusion that they preferred it over laminate.

Just finished installing on Friday. Very happy with the results.

Funny that you would post this as I just finished an install in my living room last night. We used the Smartcore Ultra (Lexington Oak Color)from Lowes. Link

Extremely happy with the install. was easy to lay down. Slight chamfered edge and textured pattern give it a really good wood look. Will probably do some more rooms when I can afford it.
