‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - btfc - 06-09-2020 “ Cox Communications is lowering Internet upload speeds in entire neighborhoods to stop what it considers "excessive usage," in a decision that punishes both heavy Internet users and their neighbors. Cox, a cable company with about 5.2 million broadband customers in the United States, has been sending notices to some heavy Internet users warning them to use less data and notifying them of neighborhood-wide speed decreases. In the case we will describe in this article, a gigabit customer who was paying $50 extra per month for unlimited data was flagged by Cox because he was using 8TB to 12TB a month. Cox responded by lowering the upload speeds on the gigabit-download plan from 35Mbps to 10Mbps for the customer's whole neighborhood. Cox confirmed to Ars that it has imposed neighborhood-wide slowdowns in multiple neighborhoods in cases like this one but didn't say how many excessive users are enough to trigger a speed decrease.” https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/06/cox-slows-internet-speeds-in-entire-neighborhoods-to-punish-any-heavy-users/ Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - NewtonMP2100 - 06-09-2020 ......that sucks.....Cox......?? Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - Speedy - 06-09-2020 Cable companies, like cell providers, are evil. And what will the FCC do about it? Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - mattkime - 06-09-2020 Verizon apparently dug up my front terrace to install fiber. Neighbors are complaining about the disruption to their landscaping but it will prevent this sort of bs. Still waiting for signup offers to arrive in the mail. Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - fmgtech - 06-09-2020 Well we have Verizon wireless here in OKC, but no FIOS. I wonder why. Charter Communications said in October that its capital expenditures excluding mobile services would total $7 billion in 2019, down from $8.9 billion in 2018. Verizon reported a small increase in capital expenditures in the first nine months of 2019.” Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - Diana - 06-09-2020 fmgtech wrote: fmgtech, OEC (Oklahoma Electric Co-op) has fiber in select areas. You may want to check into it. I know it’s in Norman but I don’t know how much it extends northward. I dumped Cox as soon as I could when they activated my area. Data slowdowns, difficulty keeping connected, constant price increases... I get twice the speeds as before for only a few dollars more, and the price they quote is all-in, no taxes and fees and crap added after the fact. Yeah, I might be somewhat ... unimpressed ... with Cox. No more nightly reboots. What’s not to like? Hell, in nyc its run basically everywhere but they don't necessarily bother connecting it to homes in most places. I think the capitol outlay can be difficult to justify, particularly if there are more lucrative investment options. Also, they don't say ANYTHING until they're ready to sign up customers. Why? Otherwise their competition will price them out of the neighborhood. Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - PeterB - 06-09-2020 Cox is the company that has a near-monopoly in my part of town (and why I can't get, and likely will never be able to get, AT&T fiber). They are literally cöcks. Edit -- as evidence of their stupidity: when I first moved into an apartment here in the city, and contacted them to get service at the new address, they denied me service on the basis that the previous tenant of the apartment (who probably departed because of Katrina and definitely wasn't coming back) had a large unpaid bill. They wouldn't provide me service without paying the unpaid bill (!). I said, "fine, I don't need your damned service anyway!" and let it be. You'd think that'd be the end of it -- it would have been, for any other sane company. But not these fools. For the next 7-8 years or so, they continuously spammed me with their stupid flyers for their crappy service. It took my writing a nasty paper letter, registered USPS, to their corporate headquarters, in order for them to permanently remove me and my address from their mailing list. Re: ‘ Cox slows Internet speeds in entire neighborhoods to punish any heavy users ‘ - deckeda - 06-09-2020 Monopolies or duopolies have little incentive to invest to provide greater service. By definition, their business is assured without it. Your taxes at work: these arrangements are all government-approved. |
