Will dropping Intel hurt future macs? - samintx - 06-10-2020
Apple is dropping Intel and making their own and there is another company too I think. What will it do to running software in the future? Will our machines we have become obsolete?

It'll probably be at least another decade before Apple has chips suitable to replace Intel on all of their Macs and you can reasonably expect Apple to continue to support Intel Macs for at least that long... Tho they'll probably pull some BS with the macOS in 5 years or so to make Intel unattractive.

I think it's one move towards IOS on the desktop. Not today but it's coming.

You will be fine for years to come. Even if Apple stopped Mac OS upgrades at Catalina, you will see security patches for 3+ years.
Instead, I think the risk is not Apple - it's Adobe deciding to abandon the Mac etc. Those developers may decide this is one platform transition too many.
The backup plan is for Apple to make it easier for iPad apps to run. They might run quite fast if Apple uses ARM processors.

Microsoft is going to ARM chips on their High End Surface Pro 13" tablet. I'd say that's significant, especially in view of the fact that not all of MS software can run on ARM chips.

Don't bet on that Suzanne. My partner's great aunt made it to 102 and 10 months. Her grandmother 98. My ex-wife's grandfather made it past 97. :oldfogey:
