If you hate mosquitoes, you'll like this - hal - 07-20-2020

A spider snatches a mosquito and eats it.

This was taken by one of my favorite youtubers - she was hiking the pacific crest trail and got this shot with an iphone 7 plus a low-priced attached macro lens.

(I forwarded past all of the setup stuff and landed just a few secs before the attack.)

We want several happy little Pacific Northwest bats to move into a bat house on my garage. They eat up to 1,000 mosquitos a night. They are adorable.

Talstar insecticide worked incredibly well to kill the mosquitos in my backyard. 1oz per gallon. In a cheapo pump sprayer. Spray the perimeter fences. Around the base of shrubs. Shady corners. etc. I tried being organic and chemical free for 5-6 years. Nothing worked. And I was miserable in my own backyard for the entire summer. This stuff works wonders. Buy the smaller bottle, it goes a long way. 1oz/1gallon/1month.

I just sent this to my friend in Savannah. She's frustrated that she can't use her yard too.

Cool video...surprised how long it took the mosquito to actually die.

And thanks for sharing that channel! I’ve spent the past two hours down a Dixie wormhole so to speak. She’s got a great balance of straight forward general advice, a wealth of gear information and her channel seems to be an incredible resource. Was she the one you posted a clip of her encounter with a Mt. lion a while back?

Hoping to get out into the trinity alps next month but we’ll see. I’ve never backpacked there at all.

If anyone wants a less-toxic method for keeping the skeeters at bay, I posted about this here a few years back ... a formula given to me by another forum member:

Mix 1 cup each of witch hazel and apple cider vinegar, add about 10 drops of essential oil***, shake thoroughly, spray yourself liberally. Smells great and they leave you alone.

***Best essential oils to use: Lemon Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Thyme. Regular eucalyptus, rosemary and Peppermint also work but don't last anywhere near as long as these three.

I've never backpacked there either - let us know how it goes and yes, that was Dixie that ran across the mountain lion and played harmonica to it. That was on the CDT.

What kind of spider was it? It's cool looking...

Going to try the homemade recipe; the mosquitos don't seem to be affected by my Bug Buddy citronella bracelets.

I use a mechanical method to kill the mosquitoes in my yard:

It also mows the lawn at the same time.

It's a spider.

The only good Mosquito that isn't a dead Mosquito:

(Ok, the abatement mosquitos are OK, too.)

Mix 1 cup each of witch hazel and apple cider vinegar, add about 10 drops of essential oil***, shake thoroughly, spray yourself liberally. Smells great and they leave you alone.

This seems like a far more preferable option to a backyard full of spiders, or even Deet.
