Looking at Comet Neowise - btfc - 07-21-2020 Right under the Big Dipper, about 2/3 from the horizon. There’s still a little glow in that direction, so it should get better. Visible with the naked eye. Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - Dennis S - 07-21-2020 There is a cloud bank under the Big Dipper here. What is that bright star or planet about 45 degrees high to the south? Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - Filliam H. Muffman - 07-21-2020 Jupiter is the brightest thing in the southern sky. I would guess it is 35 degrees for central southern US. Just type your city name at the end of the URL. www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/usa/texarkana Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - bfd - 07-21-2020 Jupiter is so close right now that it's easy to see 4 of it's largest moons if you're clear of the clouds and have some binoculars. The comet won't be back for almost 7,000 years, so there's probably half a chance it won't ever be seen by humans again. It, too, is very clearly visible with a decent set of binoculars, and even without, you'll see the smudge in the sky for the comet. Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - mrbigstuff - 07-21-2020 We definitely needed binoculars to see it but we're in the city with lots of extraneous light sources. Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - btfc - 07-21-2020 It is no Hale-Bopp, but you can see it well here, 7000 ft., very little light pollution. I'll probably try to get some photos in the next few days. Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - davester - 07-21-2020 We went comet hunting tonight, dodging clouds and light sources. After an hour of driving around, we finally found a spot on the edge of the bay with a good view. A smudge with the naked eye but a pretty nice view with binoculars. Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - Ken Sp. - 07-21-2020 After a few attempts to photograph the Neowise Comet. Finally, on this mornings walk, I was able to get a shot of the allusive comet ![]() ......actually it was a stain on the sidewalk. Have a great day! ![]() Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - davester - 07-21-2020 That looked a lot better than the photos I took. Unfortunately I only have a micro-4/3 format camera and a 62mm max zoom lens that has an f5.6 aperture at that length. Here's what my photo looked like shot with an 8-second exposure... ![]() Re: Looking at Comet Neowise - Lew Zealand - 07-21-2020 We looked at for the first time last night in 10x50 binocs (heavy light pollution in SoCal) and it was more visible than anticipated as we have an OK NW exposure here. Got the small scope out and it looked great at 15X! And Jupiter's moons are always visible in binocs if you can keep them steady and it's not too close to the horizon. Well, unless a couple are hiding behind or in front of Jupiter of course. |
