new drives - Fritz - 09-13-2020 going along with last nights crashing fun, I need to get some new storage space. I was gonna get 2x 2TB so the chance of failure would be spread out. But I see the 2TB 5400 are $54 and a 4TB is $90. Not a huge difference, $5/TB. Would you get 2x 2TB or the 1 4TB? This is mostly extra storage for my MP3,1. Re: new drives - S. Pupp - 09-13-2020 I have my media on a RAID1 (mirrored) drive, backed up to another mirrored drive, and also to my pCloud drive. I previously had my media on a RAID5 drive which itself was backed up to another RAID5 drive, but the one suffered 2 hard drive failures (one during the rebuild) and the backup suffered a hardware failure of the RAID box itself. Of the two choices you gave, I’d prefer the two smaller drives to one big drive. Re: new drives - Sarcany - 09-13-2020 Are you also buying Carbon Copy Cloner to make an automated nightly backup? Re: new drives - Fritz - 09-13-2020 Already have CCC. just not enough druve space. And to think I paid extra from my Mac IIci to get 100 m instead of 80 m a hard drive. Re: new drives - Filliam H. Muffman - 09-13-2020 Do you have a USB 3.0 card in the MP, or a SATA III/6Gbps card to take full advantage of a RAID setup? They have not been on sale recently but 3.5 inch WD drives have been on sale for $76 in the 4 TB size. Both for internal drives and external USB. Drive prices do not often drop below $40 unless you are really good at catching closeout deals. Prices can get compressed: - 1 TB for $35 - 2 TB for $45 - 4 TB for $75 - 8 TB for $120 (best price in $/TB) - 10 TB for $165. With a little detective work, you might be able to find 2.5 inch drives in an external USB RAID with a capacity of 4 TB. I have not noticed these recently because I have not been looking for drives around that storage size. Re: new drives - mattkime - 09-13-2020 You might consider a cloud backup solution as well. Re: new drives - Fritz - 09-13-2020 I'd think that cloud back up would be fkn $$$ compared to more drive space. Re: new drives - mattkime - 09-13-2020 Fritz wrote: Back blaze is $60/year. How much is your data worth? Re: new drives - Fritz - 09-13-2020 really? damn. reasonable enough. I've not heard of them. I take it you use them and are happy? I don't have a significant amount, maybe 2T. I use Tresorit for home and biz files, but they're dinky compared to audio. Re: new drives - jdc - 09-13-2020 backblaze is prob #1 or #2 in a google search. I thought tresorit was based in Europe? just looked them up... $12 for 1 TB? ouch. Even iCloud is less $ for double the space. BB user for over 6 years, never had to use the service, but its there if I need it. Heck even Time Machine is free, just get a second drive. internal, external, portable, doenst matter. imho, using CCC manually "every week or so" isnt a backup, its just a copy. gotta have something automated ... or this happens. |
