kids at school, teachers at home - space-time - 09-13-2020

Here is an interesting one wife saw on facebook last night. Apparently some of the teachers were teaching from Home via Zoom even though some of the kids were in school. This was at one of the high schools here in town.

I can't really blame the teachers especially if they are at high risk. If these are highschool kids and the teacher is not present, I don't see the much advantage of kids going to school. My son started high school last week, online and goes to school 1/2 days this week. if that happens with his teachers, I will switch to virtual learning.

My wife was telling me that her principal was discussing the same thing the other day. The teachers staying at home while they do the “hybrid” teaching (parents can request keeping their kids at home) would be the teachers with their health compromised or family member with health conditions, they would be allowed to teach remotely. The school surveyed parents and about half want them home.

Most likely a teacher who has a restriction that they cannot be in the building but isn't sick. Might be quarantined due to potential exposure or have a significant health issue. Could also be that they have a dependant that cannot go to school or daycare so the teacher has to stay home to take care of them. There are a ton of reasons.

At a high school, the kids probably see 6 to 8 different teachers a day. Maybe 1 or 2 are teaching remotely so it still probably makes sense to keep them in school. It also provides the students with a suitable learning environment. Most homes are not setup to be optimal for learning. Lots of distractions, poor internet, no dedicated learning spaces, etc.

There are a ton of legal liabilities of not having an adult physically in the classroom.

Yeah, I don't see ANY school district, ANYWHERE in the country allowing kids in a classroom without supervision. We're not allowing students on campus at all... which has been hard, since using the playground on weekends, etc, has been standard practice for decades. Now, we lock the gates (we had to install gates in a couple locations) and keep people off campus.

I'm sure they have a EA/Para/Student Teacher in the room supervising while the licensed teacher is teaching remotely. No school is allowed to have kids alone in the classroom.

So the EA/Para/TA is expendable?
I'm sorry, but if it isn't safe enough for a teacher, then it isn't safe enough for anyone.

Teacher may be at high risk or be quarantined.
