Fleeing from police should not be a death sentence.
Chases are stupid , and result in bystander death and injuries.
You know who the person is. you have them on body cam. You have them on dashcam. You have their car information. In a world full of modern surveillance technology, you can just wait for them to come home and pick them up there without risk.

We need to focus on keeping people safe. That includes those who may have committed crimes.

^This. The only valid reason I can see is if the perp was putting the public at great risk, like spraying bullets from a moving car. If the perp is trying to escape, who's in danger? The cop? I don't think so.

Hit the ‘post’ button too soon. I’ll repost later. Sorry.

I wish I could type as fast as my late, great auntie. She could have transcribed “War and Peace” and made her pork chops for dinner by now.

I have few answers. Many questions and likely at least one or two “hot takes” as the parlance goes these days.

I’m going to take a stab at getting closer to the meat of things in real time.

What could be more apt than bullet points?
(In no particular order)
  • The killing of Black people is out of control.
  • It’s a cancer eating away at this country in ways obvious and no so obvious.
  • If you’re not already clear on it, it is a fact that you can be as innocent as a new born babe and still be targeted by police and abused.
  • The flip side of that is (hot take #1) that does not make every use of force by law enforcement officers against Blacks a blow to justice.
  • If you are engaged in criminal activity (About to stab someone, say.) you are not George Floyd or Trayvon Martin.
(Selling cigarettes in front of the bodega? Crying eight year old “resisting”? Different kettles of fish.)
  • That doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly got a bullseye on your forehead or have become a human piñata. You have gone from dog bites man to man pokes bear.
So how do we fix it?
  • It MAY be a relatively small percentage swinging the clubs and pulling the triggers, but there’s no getting around it, silence equals complicity.
  • The system is broken and the cancer runs deep.
  • The old leadership, with few exceptions, has failed. It needs to GO. Virtually all of it.
  • Lying. Cover ups. Musical chairs with criminal cops. Bone deep sentiments of ‘we’re at war’, ‘it’s us versus “them”’. Blue walls of silence. It has to come out root and stem.
  • Police violence. Police murder. A generations long #metoo “moment”.

The political will to solve the problem continues to grow, but I’d have to say the tank is probably only half way full.

Feel free to add your own 3x5 cards to the cork board. Bring your own colored yarn, the pushpins are free.

Not enough people have politically-acceptable quick fixes and clean solutions to easily posit what so-called “reform” looks like.

Root and stem ... yeah maybe. We’re in the identification stage only, and far too few have agreed there’s a problem. This manifests as “can’t be done” and all manner of noise meanwhile.
