Can you imaging gerrymandering in new states ?
The state of OhioAg... every county except the urban areas, which remain Ohio ?

DC, Puerto Rico, Samoa... these are legitimate state ideas. The US citizens in those territories have no representation. They deserve a Congressperson or two. They derserve the allocated two senators.

Much like the transition from territory to state referenced in the article, the process was reasonably set up. Geographic borders (mostly) were followed.

Wouldn't establishing Samoa as a US state smack of imperialism? Thought those days were over.

Guam has a greater claim on statehood based on a population four times that of American Samoa. At 48000, American Samoa is only the size of a small city. Even the US Virgin Islands is twice the size of American Samoa.

While Puerto Rico should be given statehood once it's house is in order, I personally think Washington should be incorporated into Maryland, with the addition of representatives. That gives the residents representation without altering the Senate.

DC residents are rejecting the MD merger concept in part because their asks for representatives have been ignored so long.
