I know there is the one you can buy preloaded from TechTool, but are these available anywhere else?
Would any firewire thumbdrive be bootable?

yes, it would be bootable, depending on the machine. I think Weibtech makes a FW thumbdrive. Another one is Kangaru.

I put my old Pismo 40G 2.5" ATA drive in an OWC aluminum fanless, self-powered case. Not a thumb drive, but very portable. Shirt pocket-sized. Just the drive and a cable. Depending on what you're trying to do, might be a good alternative.

I've been considering doing the following:
Firewire Compact Flash Reader + Compact Flash card
Should be cheaper and only a bit larger than a regular flash drive.

same here -- if you look on ebay there are some *really* small 2.5" FW cases -- not cheap -- like $30 but for the size theres nothing that small out there

I have 2 baby VST FW drives, and they work great. About the size of 2 decks of cards side by side.

You could also get a CF to 2.5" IDE adapter, and then put a CF card in a 2.5" firewire case.
BTW, Wiebetech's firewire thumb drive (which was an adapter for CF) has been long discontinued and is very hard to find.

Nice thing about this is you could then add capacity by just adding cards. You don't need to duplicate the FW connectivity just to add storage.

the intellimacs with USB 2 can boot from a USB thumb drive AFAIK.
