two for Thursday rant - Fritz - 07-22-2021 no standard on sites for entering phone numbers, birthdays etc. some want dashes, some spaces, some parenthesis, some nothing at all, etc. drivers who cut corners on turns drivers who think turn signals are too much effort drivers who brake for hallucinations (when you 3 car lengths behind at 30) drivers who think red lights (or stop signs) are for others. drivers who answer phones to their ear or text, even though their late model car has bluetooth. drivers at a 4 way stop intersection what get there 2nd, but go 1st. drivers who drive down the center of narrow neighborhood streets. ok, I'm done. Sorry for the interruption. Re: two for Thursday rant - cbelt3 - 07-22-2021 Ah.. Human Interface Standards. I remember when Apple's standards were the best. Manuals ? We don't need no stinkin manuals ! And then... stuff happened and they walked away from them. I still try to use them in my UI designs. My favorite pet peeve ? Development tools SUCK ! The UI's are a hodge podge of crap and they are buggy as heck. There's an assumption that developers can 'figure it out' or the people that develop them can't be arsed to talk to each other or set any standards. I set standards for our team. They keep getting ignored by random offshore team members. It's a good thing I'll be retiring in less than 10 years. I don't have the energy to keep tilting at those windmills. Re: two for Thursday rant - lost in space - 07-22-2021 drivers who arrive at a four-way stop just after me, but don't make a full stop so they can beat me through the intersection. drivers who pull up ahead of me waiting as I'm leaving a parallel parking space so I have to drive around them. clerks who say, "purrrfect" when I give my name while checking in at a hotel, dr.'s office, etc. Like I got it right. Re: two for Thursday rant - DP - 07-22-2021 Sounds like you've been driving in Michigan! And, in addition to your list, Fritz; Driver in left lane who, all of a sudden, jams on their brakes and STOPS in the middle of 50mph traffic to make a right turn on the road they almost missed... All too common here in the Detroit metro area, especially the running of red lights. When I first started traveling to Miami on business, the first thing I learned there was to NOT go when the traffic light turned green as 2, 3, or more cars of the cross traffic would still be going thru the just-changed-to red light. And we see that here now... Re: two for Thursday rant - S. Pupp - 07-22-2021 I'll add some traffic behavior in my part of SC that bothers me: 1. Drivers driving on the wrong side of the road - happens almost daily on the busy street where I live. They ignore the medians, and just drive wherever. It doesn't help that the medians create a "can't get there from here" situation. 2. People running in front of the car, just like deer do, in the dark and in the rain. 3. When making a left turn, oncoming cars will accelerate and try to hit you, going so far as to mount the curb and drive on the pavement to try to get you. I waited behind, like a human being, with my turn signal on. the lady behind me got impatient and hit the horn. I waved her on....my middle finger might have been slightly more extended... Re: two for Thursday rant - Fritz - 07-22-2021 humans crossing in the middle of a busy road with the light against them. Re: two for Thursday rant - DeusxMac - 07-22-2021 80% of Drivers Consider Themselves Above Average. Dunning–Kruger effect Why we overestimate our competence Re: two for Thursday rant - Randalls - 07-22-2021 How about one of my faves, following a car that does the classic swing out wide to the left to make a right turn (with no signal). Re: two for Thursday rant - Rick-o - 07-22-2021 > drivers who think turn signals are too much effort Heh! I had an incident a few weeks ago in a small town near me. I'm heading home and as I approached the small town, I was following a pick-up truck with one long board, maybe 2"x10"x12' that was sticking out 4' from the bed, unsecured (tailgate up and no red flag on the board, which is required). I was following at a safe distance when he hit the brakes hard and turned into a hardware store with no turn signal, nearly dumping the unsecured board. Of course, I had to hit the brakes hard also, so after dodging his vehicle, I honked the horn to let him know how careless he was. I looked in the rear view mirror about a block away and seen the driver and passenger just stopping from running at me on foot, like they were going to chase me down if I got caught at the next traffic light (it was green). So apparently, this young man does what he wants and if you say or do something, he goes right to redline! Unbelievable!! :RollingEyesSmiley5: |
