"Governor Who?" - PeterB - 08-05-2021

I love it. It'd be funny except for the fact of what's happening right now there.

From the Miami Herald: "We have some advice for our well-intentioned President: Don’t waste your breath. Odds are, the allegedly licentious Gov. Cuomo will tender his resignation long before Florida sees a mask mandate from our anti-mandate leader." https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/editorials/article253238873.html

Here was the best paragraph in that editorial --

Florida’s own Gov. Ron DeSantis. Our irresponsible governor who mocks mask wearing as being, apparently, for wusses. Our bullying governor who threatens to cut vital funding if local officials even think of imposing mask mandates on public-school students. (The delta variant has led to a surge in children being hospitalized in Florida.) Our shrewd governor who’s funding his re-election campaign with drink koozies and T-shirts that mock Dr. Anthony Fauci. Our scapegoating governor who blamed reporters at a news conference in Miami for causing “hysteria” by reporting the record-high number of hospitalizations in the state.

How many Miami Herald like editorial boards are there throughout Florida? My guess is the vast majority will be silent while some will side with GovernorDeath.

Re: "Governor Who?" - Ombligo - 08-06-2021

He is being called out by virtually every editorial board, big and small.

I've seen editorials from:
Tampa Bay Times (largest in the state)
Miami Herald
Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinal
Orlando Sentinal
Florida Times-Union (notable they are the Republican leaning paper in Jacksonville)
Gainesville Sun
Tallahassee Democrat
Citrus County Chronicle (small paper in the heart of Trump country)

Great editorial ...

The thing I find incredible is that he's claiming that there've been no studies on the negative impacts of masks on the physical and emotional well-being of children; he's also more or less claimed that corona is not a major threat to children. Both statements are demonstrably false. There's NO evidence to support the view that masks interfere with childrens' ability to breathe or to socialize. Even if there were, the children's social development is secondary to their being alive (if they're dead, poor social skills won't be a problem). And as for corona not being a major threat to children, his own state is rapidly disproving that statement ... there are kids fighting for their lives in ICU's in Florida and elsewhere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPwqpe_-m7E ... 153 hospitalized children in Florida. And anyone who thinks a teen can't get seriously ill from this should watch this video, which is pre-Delta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpjFZX40pM0

Edit: and things aren't looking too good for him, polling-wise: https://floridapolitics.com/archives/445635-poll-ron-desantis-approval-rating-sags-as-covid-19-rages/
... he's apparently making the same mistake as his orange idol: lying about a pandemic while people are dying left and right does not make you popular, nor does it make for a good re-election strategy.

Dan Rather had a few words for your governor as well.

But what puzzles me is that I really don’t know what these people see as their endgame. Is a record of death something that serves even their most narrow self interests? The late Secretary of State George Shultz told me in the context of climate change that those who deny the truth will eventually be “mugged by reality.”
