The Ventures: Stars On Guitars - steve... - 01-09-2022 The Ventures: Stars On Guitars (2020) 1 h 29 min I came across this documentary on Amazon Prime last night and found it very watchable. I'm not much of a music person but I know several here are. I have one of their albums from the 60s. The Ventures are still HUGE in Japan. There's lots of talk about technique and equipment. The Ventures have been thrilling music lovers with songs like "Wipe Out" and "Hawaii 5-0" since 1959. Now, see the story of the world's most famous instrumental rock and roll band from those who know them the best: movie stars, music legends, and their family. Witness the rise and influence of the electric guitar, the history, and the relevance of the band in pop culture still today. A few weeks late, but if you don't like The Ventures Christmas Album, we can't be friends. Re: The Ventures: Stars On Guitars - deckeda - 01-09-2022 The Ventures are still HUGE in Japan. That's because surf music is huge in Japan. Right now I'm listening to a show by Surf Coasters from 2004, downloaded from archive.org It's a good recording but Shigeo Naka's insane guitar is unfortunately recessed in the mix. (It's an audience recording.) If you're OK with the idea of surf music being expanded into some long jams you'll really dig this. It's really much "more" than just Dick Dale covers. https://archive.org/details/surfcoast2004-04-16.flac16 There's now a lot of commercial things on Archive.org (why, I have no idea, since you only get 30-second clips) but if you sort through you can find interesting things, even from commercial artists who OK'd some concerts etc to be uploaded there. Archive.org has one of my very favorite Warren Zevon recordings, a radio interview. When I found it I downloaded and edited out the DJ's interview patter ... it was pretty horrible and the DJ was asking Zevon a lot of inane questions. https://archive.org/details/wz1976-10-13.wz1976-10-13-WMMS-no_interview.flac16 but if you don't like The Ventures Christmas Album, we can't be friends. Semie Moseley's idea* to trace a LH Strat as a right handed guitar & then 'German carve' the top was his one finger salute to Rickenbacker from where he had been fired. Moseley had apprenticed @ Rick under German luthier Roger Rossmeisl, a former Gibson employee who, in 1962 was hired away from Rick by Leo Fender. Within 10 years he retired and returned to Germany. *Many believe Rossmeisl actually designed the classic Mosrite Model I (aka "Ventures Model"). Johnny Ramone & his Model 1... ![]() btw, contrary to internet fiction Semie Moseley never worked for Leo Fender! |
