Prescription lenses for sunglasses - any advice? - mattkime - 02-21-2022

I have a favorite pair of sunglasses that I'd like to get prescription lenses for...and wow, its more expensive than I was initially expecting. Are there online services people prefer? Would I be better off going to my optometrist?

I'm looking for distance vision / polarized / trivex lenses. I'm frequently tempted to go with the higher quality option - a couple of online services put these in the $200-300 range which seems, um, fucking expensive but I'm new to this racket.

Pfft, I said 'frames' in the title instead of 'lenses', :pppppp

Go to your optometrist. If something goes wrong (can't seen etc), real easy to deal with in town people rather than do it through the inter webs.

Yes, Rx sunglasses will be/can be expensive, especially if its going to be put in a specific pair of glasses that they will have to custom make the lenses. That's what vision insurance is for?. A lot of places will give a discount on glasses/lenses #2 (mine does 50% discount on second pair).

That's been my experience. Others may have had good luck in the inter webs.

zenni.com has worked well for me. Costs are so low that you don't feel bad about rolling the dice on something you're not sure about.

Glasses.com has sales all the time and does a good job w/ a fairly robust selection of frames. Costco is good for lenses, but ever since Luxotica took over the eyeglasses world, Costco's selection of higher end frames is near non-existent, and they do charge an extra $25 for using your own frames, though they occasionally do get brand name sunglasses in stock. Americas Best, Visionworks, Brillen, etc., can all crank out single vision, polarized sunglasses at a reasonable price. $200 these days is doable, while $300 is in the realm of ya really want 'em/gotta have 'em. Any reason for trivex vs. polycarbonate vs. high index lenses?

Same here. But most people want extras and won’t do without them, so they’re stuck with high prices.

I would check with Costco if you really want to use the frames you have.
To get sub $200 sunglasses, I think Zenni is your best option, but you would have to get new frames, as they won’t just do lenses.
Zenni does have polarized lenses, I have some. They do have high index lightweight lenses, but I don’t think they have trivex, specifically.
I would see if Zenni has any frames similar to what you have and like, as I am pretty sure a new pair with lenses will be much less than just the lenses elsewhere.

Don’t leave them in a cab is my advice!

I have no interest in buying new frames. Only getting new lenses for existing frames.

Some eyeglass brick and mortar won’t put new lenses into old frames that weren’t bought from them. They don’t want to be responsible if the frames “break” while putting new lenses in.

Tho, this wasn’t a problem years ago…don’t know why it is now.
