U.S. women soccer players reached a landmark agreement with the sport's American governing body on Tuesday to end a six-year legal battle over equal pay, a deal in which they are promised $24 million plus bonuses that match those of the men. Here's what to know:

The U.S. Soccer Federation and the women announced a deal Tuesday that will have players split $22 million, about one-third of what they had sought in damages. The USSF also agreed to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at growing the sport for women. The USSF committed to providing an equal rate of pay for the women's and men's national teams -- including World Cup bonuses -- subject to collective bargaining agreements with the unions that separately represent the women and men.

Excellent! Overdue, but better late than never.

Kudos to Megan Rapinoe and othe players who tackled this issue and wouldn't let go.

The interesting thing about this one is it appears women's soccer draws more viewership than men's. eg https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/10/us-viewership-of-the-womens-world-cup-final-was-higher-than-the-mens.html

So equal (or even higher) pay here makes sense. I know a lot of people who don't realize that sports players are essentially sales people. For example, they sell ads on TV. It makes sense that those who sell more get paid more. Viewership of other sports has a more dramatic difference.

I always watch the US Women’s team. I can’t stand all the theatrics in the men’s game.

I stopped watching the "sport" because of all the acting. Maybe when games were on tiny TVs people didn't notice. But now that we have HD, 4k and can do our own replays, the sport has to change. The NFL has made some fair changes and soccer is way behind. Maybe I'll have to check out the women's games.
