persistent SMC power resets - dmag - 02-24-2022

Hey guys,

Old mid-2012 MBP, 2.9 GHZ i7, double 2TB SSDs, running 10.15.7.

I've had to do three SMC power resets in the last two days, two of those in the last 30 minutes. It just shuts down without any apparent symptoms.

I can't rebuild the disk with Disk Warrior because it doesn't work on APFS disks.

Questions...

1. Is there a tool like DW that will deal with APSF disks?

2. What am I possibly up against, considering these power resets?

3. If anyone has been down this road, I'd appreciate knowing what you did.

Upgrading to a newer computer is on the table, but I have to live with what I have for a few more months.

Thanks

Possible the battery is dead?

With a dead battery, the slightest jiggle of the power cord could shut the Mac down.

And when a battery has completely run down, it sometimes takes a SMC reset to get a MacBook Pro to boot.

The battery IS almost gone. There were no jiggles of any kind, but that could be the reason. I'm ordering a new one. Thanks.
