25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - steve... - 02-25-2022 February 24, 1997 I also bought a 17" Applevision 1710 display, both from CDW: $2K for the Mac and $1K for the display. It was a huge investment for me at the time. Wasn't too long before I found DealMac and was ordering memory and peripherals. Still feel like a newbie next to many of you here. :-) Re: 25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - N-OS X-tasy! - 02-25-2022 Next year will be the 30th anniversary of my first Mac purchase, a Quadra 610. By that point, though, I'd already been a Mac user for seven years, having first discovered the Mac in 1986 via my girlfriend's roommate's new Mac SE. It was love at first sight. ![]() Re: 25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - mattkime - 02-25-2022 How much ram? What size hard drive? Re: 25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - RgrF - 02-25-2022 1983, a friend was contracted to document Hypercard for the yet unveild new Apple product - Macintosh. Sworn to secrecy under penalty of loss of friendship and eternal damnation to using MicroSoft products. First Mac+ didn't come until 1987 or so and, even with said friends Apple discount, cost as much as a decent used car. Should have put the money into AAPL instead. Re: 25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - cbelt3 - 02-25-2022 Bought a used Mac+ in 1989, did a bit of freelance Aldus Pagemaker work here and there. Replaced the dang flyback transformer twice, even rebuilding the fried circuit board once. When it finally burned out despite the fan I had added I picked up a used SE/30. Then a Radius Pivot monitor and card, and a Daystrom 040 card and more RAM. I had that little guy working well. I eventually sold it in 1997. For the longest time my rule was "Never pay more than $500 for a computer". I finally broke that rule when I bought an iBook SE for my wife. Re: 25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - mrbigstuff - 02-25-2022 My dad bought a IICI about 1989 (?) but mostly I recall him paying an extra $500 to go from a 80mb hard drive to a 100mb hard drive. Haha. Pupp - 02-25-2022 2000, I bought a used PowerMac 7600 for only $600. It was my third Mac, having first bought a Mac Plus (a requirement of my college) in 1986 that was my only computer for 9 years, followed by a Performa 475. Now, my office is so littered with legacy Macs, some purchased at absurdly low prices (e.g. $5 for a IIfx, $10 for an SE/30 with an Xceed external video card), that there's no room for me. Re: 25 years ago today: bought my first computer: Power Mac 7300/180 - Microman - 02-25-2022 Recommended a Iivx to a person. Was discontinued a few months later, and it had just come out. |
