Putin creating a wasteland - samintx - 03-10-2022

What will Russia do with Ukraine if leveled. Population gone? How many will return? Will Putin move on to other fields?

Right now flu, Covid, colds and other diseases have not shown up but they will. The children could be wiped out from bombs or disease.

Sad outlook.

He has Stalin's example to uphold.

Never forget the Holodomor... an ethnocide event deliberately caused by Stalin, where 4 million people were murdered. Why are there 'Russian speaking people' in Ukraine ? Because the Ukranian people were murdered.

Putin is probably more worried about seizing Ukrainian agriculture harvests than any people.

Russia and Ukraine are key players in the global agricultural trade, with both nations accounting for a quarter of the world's wheat exports, including at least 14% of corn exports in 2020, and a joint 58% of global sunflower oil exports in the same year

Like virtually all would-be conquerors before him, he wants the land, not the people.

I think Putin convinced himself that the Ukrainians would not resist the invasion nearly as much as they have - so that he would take over a country that was mostly intact. But the Ukrainians are resisting mightily and the Russian military appears to not be particularly good. And Putin is too "proud" to back down after all his bluster about Ukraine really being part of mother Russia and has to be brought be into the fold. So, he probably feels like he can't back down and will no doubt acquiesce to the demolition of much of Ukraine if that is what it takes to "get it back".

That is part of it, but there was a large existing Russian presence in Ukraine long before the 1930s. They tended to populate the urban areas, the rural areas were largely Ukrainian. The population shifts and losses in the rural Ukraine from the Holodomor in part did result in some more Russian speaking people ending up there.
