Apple ships 79lb. kit to someone to fix iPhone SE battery - pRICE cUBE - 05-22-2022 https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/21/23079058/apple-self-service-iphone-repair-kit-hands-on The thing you should understand about Apple’s home repair process is that it’s a far cry from traditional DIY if you opt for the kit — which I did, once I saw the repair manual only contains instructions for Apple’s own tools. (You can just buy a battery if you want.) I expected Apple would send me a small box of screwdrivers, spudgers, and pliers; I own a mini iPhone, after all. Instead, I found two giant Pelican cases — 79 pounds of tools — on my front porch. I couldn’t believe just how big and heavy they were considering Apple’s paying to ship them both ways. I lugged those cases onto a BART train to San Francisco and dragged them down the streets to our office. Then, I set everything out on a table and got started. ![]() Re: Apple ships 79lb. kit to someone to fix iPhone SE battery - cbelt3 - 05-22-2022 Ah yes.... crazy like a fox. Just like the auto manufacturers.. Sure, you can fix your own car . You need tool ADOIQN@($U!)@HU-12, NOT -11. And 100 hours of training. Re: Apple ships 79lb. kit to someone to fix iPhone SE battery - gadje - 05-22-2022 This was discussed a few weeks ago. I'll pay $79 and let Apple do it. Re: Apple ships 79lb. kit to someone to fix iPhone SE battery - mrbigstuff - 05-22-2022 Wow.... Re: Apple ships 79lb. kit to someone to fix iPhone SE battery - Speedy - 05-22-2022 Yeah, none of that surprised me. What surprised me was the price tag. $69 for a new battery — the same price the Apple Store charges for a battery replacement, except here I get to do all the work and assume all the risk. $49 to rent Apple’s tools for a week, more than wiping out any refund I might get for returning the old used part. A $1,200 credit card hold for the toolkit, which I would forfeit if the tools weren’t returned within seven days of delivery. Let’s be clear: this is a ridiculous amount of risk for the average person who just wants to put a new battery in their phone. And it’s frankly weird for Apple to insist on you covering the full value of the tools. “It’s not like when you rent a car they make you put down $20,000 as a safety deposit,” my colleague Mitchell Clark points out. I should also mention the Pelican cases landed at my door two days before the battery arrived, so I only had five days to do the job before that $1,200 deadline. Muffman - 05-22-2022 I posted the Snazzy Labs version two weeks ago. https://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,2736412 Most of the repair sites thinks it qualifies as r/MaliciousCompliance/ Now they just need to start posting schematics like Framework. Framework laptop finally embraces "schematics or die", long live framework! https: //youtu.be/8cJj8PUY0DU |
