Town cuts off it's nose to spite it's face - Ombligo - 05-23-2022
When the Passadumkeag, Maine town council turned down the Christen Bouchard vacation request last April, she quit. The town has been shut down since then.
Bouchard was more than just the town clerk - she was also responsible for handling records, licensing pets, registering vehicles for residents, and working as the town liaison with the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
The council has not found anyone else willing to accept the $13,500 annual salary job. It also has openings for an animal control officer, a code enforcement officer, and an accessor.
The reason her request was turned down? It did not have someone to cover for her.

for a 40 hour week, that's $6.50 an hour. Even half time, that's only $13

Article says it was 16 hours a week, but she came in extra to cover the 50 other things they expected her to pick up.

The fact that the town felt it had leverage for such a low paying job is pretty laughable. Let her take off a smidgen of time or complete and indefinite shutdown. Real geniuses there.

Working at a small company, I can empathize. Not getting approval for vacation time due to lack of coverage STINKS.

In my current position, I basically can take leave as needed but nobody else is doing my job so it just means more work when I get back. Yay.

It was 16hours/week, but she said that she often worked more than that because things needed to be done on time, so she just did it.
