Uber questions - rz - 05-24-2022

I signed up for Uber the other day because I need a ride to the airport and didn't want to leave my car at a parking place while I was on vacation. I have a couple of questions that I figured this august board could answer.

1) I just signed up for a ride for "me", but my teen-aged son will be riding with me. Was I supposed to tell them that, or does he go "free"?
2) I assume I'm supposed to tip the driver. Do I give him a cash tip, or is it supposed to go through the app?

i think ride for you simply means you’re not sharing the ride with another passenger they might take enroute.

i always tip in the app.

Used to use Uber a lot. Never even occurred to me to tell them how many passengers. I’m simply hiring a car and driver, like a taxi; not ‘booking seats’.

Always tipped in the app.

I signed up for Uber a couple of weeks ago in prep for our trip to Boston. We met our son (& family) there. He and I alternated calling Uber. We had to specify that we were a party of 5. The one time we did ride separately, we were a party of two and I (6'-4") had a walker. I did not want some guy in a Honda Fit accepting the request.

I tipped on the credit card trip machine that every Uber has. We probably used Uber 10 times in 4 days. Interestingly, every driver was from a different country. I really enjoyed that. Europe, Asia, N. America, S. America, and Africa were represented.

Ok thanks. My son is small, and we will only have one small bag as luggage. Should be ok.

You can get 4 people in Uber cars. That's the number of available seatbelts. It could be a small car so you have to consider how much luggage you're hauling. As long as you don't request a shared ride (Uber Pool), it's all yours for that trip.

Yup, for shared rides you have to tell them how many people so they can schedule accordingly (although have they started up shared rides again yet?).

Although it looks like the "limit" for a standard Uber is 3 people (the passenger limit is noted after each ride option). I once had Uber up-charge me after the fact when we exceeded that limit, which means the driver snitched on me, which I found incredibly annoying since I tipped very well for that ride.

The cynical side of me has a completely different take on that...

As long as you're not using "Uber Pool", which is a shared service that you never, ever want to use, you don't specify number of riders--other than the type of Uber, regular or extra large.

The app will tell you the capacity of the car. For regular Uber ("Uber X") it is up to 4. If you have 5-6 then you're supposed to book an XL.

During the pandemic, capacity of cars was reduced by 1, because no one was allowed to sit in the front seat (1-3 for Uber X, 1-5 for XL). When the mask requirement for transportation got nuked, that went back to normal. I still don't want anyone sitting in my front seat, however.

Probably two reasons for that. First, a lot of people abuse that and book an X because it is cheaper when they really need an XL. The app tells you what vehicle you're getting so they will cancel if it's not an XL vehicle (van or SUV).

Second, if you tipped in the app instead of cash, the driver doesn't always get the tip in a timely fashion.

There is nowhere to enter the amount of passengers in your party. So yes, your son rides "free".

2) I assume I'm supposed to tip the driver. Do I give him a cash tip, or is it supposed to go through the app?

You can tip in cash or on the Uber app. I've always just used the app.

Since this is your first Uber ride — FYI, when you reach your destination all you do is thank the driver for the ride and exit the car. No fumbling with your phone or awkwardly tipping while still in the Uber car. Just hop out. After you get out and the Uber car drives off, the Uber app will ping you, asking you to rate the driver and ask if you want to tip the driver through the app. It's all very streamlined.

Maybe take a test run with Uber to a restaurant to familiarize yourself with the process before the airport drop-off. As a bonus, have a some glasses of wine since you're not driving. It's a very streamlined service and app.

For pick-up, Uber uses GPS to locate your location. No need to enter your exact address or location or cross streets. So helpful when you're at a mall entrance, airport terminal, or unfamiliar location where there are no street signs right in front of you. Uber will find you for pick-up.

But like everything using GPS, it can be off by quite a bit, so be sure to verify that it locates you correctly.

Also, you can see the car on the map in real time (with a bit of a delay), but the driver can't see your live location unless you enable that feature (which I don't necessarily recommend). Where ever that pin is initially dropped is all the driver gets.
