IMHO, Apple really shit the bed with this "design". I mean What the Actual FUCK? I've had experience VESA mounting an older Apple Display. What a clusterfuck. Had to buy some fancy schmancy adapter from apple that cost more than the monitor arm, and then had to disassemble the stand and reassemble the mount with like 20 teeny tiny screws that strip out with the slightest torque.
Fast forward to now. I've got a 2013 iMac that we still use for some things and it could stand to have a more tidy work area. Low and behold. Apple's VESA mount department strikes again. From what I've read it seems the only way I can get a VESA mount for a 2013 iMac is to COMPLETELY disassemble it down to the motherboard and install it. Plus I'm sure it also requires some expensive Apple adapter that you can't even find anymore.

Maybe they will send you a 49lb box of tools to install it.
Seriously though, Apple really doesn’t even try to play nice with others.

It's only that bad if you remove the leg.
Have you done a Google Shopping or Amazon search for an iMac VESA adapter?
Several of them leave the leg intact, using the cable-hole in the leg as an anchor.

I ordered my last iMac with the VESA mount. It was the only way to get it.
Those other mounts are a kludge and having the leg still dangling defeats the purpose of getting it up off of the desktop.

Apple used to be about form following function, and now it is form first, function later. This is legacy from the Jony Ive era.
I’ve seen some hope that things will get back to more about functionality. Although, the new 27" Studio Display and the interchangeability of the three ways you can purchase it, is sad.

Still, there are adapters that attach to the stand and don't require much work at all to install.

It's been posted before. Snazzy Labs did a video about how the Apple Store broke his iMac Pro installing the VESA mount.

Oh. Trust me. I've seen those "solutions" that elevate the iMac WITH the stand attached. Sorry. They are the visual representation of a kludge and have no place in my home.
