How can I "unlink" a mac that is MDM controlled? - JPK - 05-27-2022

I recently picked up a cheap Mac Mini that was described as

"locked to an MDM server, but this does not affect the operation of the unit."

I am assuming this was a surplus school unit that was previously 'managed'.

Seller nuked and repaved but the MDM link still stays in place.

I have no idea who the original owner was. Can Apple disable this?

Any info is appreciated.

Depends if it's in Apple Business Manager and the Device Enrollment Program.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204142

https://www.manageengine.com/mobile-device-management/help/enrollment/device_enrollment_program_ios_devices.html

In some cases, it will always re-enroll itself even it it's wiped as soon as it hits the internet.

Take a look at this:
https://www.kandji.io/apple-mdm-definitions/how-do-i-release-a-device-from-apple-business-manager/

If a company-owned Apple device has been lost, stolen, sold, or otherwise damaged, it can be removed from Apple Business Manager in just a few steps. This is called “releasing” a device, and it can be done directly through Apple Business Manager or a mobile device management (MDM) solution.

To release a device from Apple Business Manager, simply click “Device Assignments” and locate the device in question via serial number, order number, or CSV file. Then, simply choose “Release Devices” from the pop-up menu and click “Done.”

Do an erase and install and it will tell you the organizations name on one of the setup screens.

OK, did a nuke and repave and found it was set up by the San Bernardino City Unified School District. I have reached out to their IT depart to see if they can release it.

Thanks.
