T-Mobile G5 Home Internet - kap - 05-29-2022

Pure frustration with Spectrum internet (we have no other internet providers in our area. Hoping Frontier FIOS is coming soon) we are test-running T-Mobile G5 Home Internet with a 2nd generation router/modem black box. The setup was easy enough; however, none of our PC devices (Wins 11 desktop, Mac PowerBook 2010 and Linux) picks up the signal. The black box is 5 ft away from the window of our small 2nd floor home office/library. Signal strength shows 5 full bars. Calling TMobile tech, auto-op said the wait is an hour for a callback. Feeling like this is just a bigger hotspot device with a G5 signal. I am thinking it's not worthy $50 per month. What do y'all think?

Here in LA SoCal ours works as advertised with better up and down speeds than Spectrum. We've not had connectivity issues with any of Apple devices (2 iMacs, 3iPads) or our Roku TVs. It took a bit to figure out the TV part but now are ready to kiss the $250/mo cable bill goodby.

suggest restart the powerbook and zap the pRam.
Then check the WiFi setting again.
I assume by 5 bars, you mean the cell signal.
Have you a phone to test the wifi signal to an alternate destination?

Didn’t work well in NJ but we’re in a dip that’s been a problem for reception. Thought it would be an alternative to Optimum but at the speed we got it was slow as molasses. Returned after two days and now I am fighting to get the charges taken off the bill before autopay kicks in.

I have not been very happy with T-Mobile’s phone and local store service but the SO wanted to cut costs. Especially the local store - fricking morons.

AND I just escalated a complaint against the store in my recent service phone call.

However, it’s beyond me as to “why” they are making people jump through several phone calls to cancel the service and get the charges off the bill. It should be a one and done if you want me to recommend T-Mobile to anyone.

there is one issue I found with T-Mo stores. You have to be in a corporate T-Mo store to have a chance of finding intelligent life.
The resellers/franchise are useless.

As far as their "coverage" map. Lots of exaggeration. I called and kept at it until I had a top level tech who admitted service here was what it is for now. The map says I've got 4G LTE. Barely a shadow of a bar without the cell spot in the house.

Same with the home stay in Fla.

If I put up a helical antenna, probably.

....for me faster and cheaper then Spectrum.....14 day test drive....just canceled Spectrum which was $74.99 for the slowest speed.....the T-Mobile is so much faster....

How close to the devices is the T-Mobilerouter? You get 5G to that as your Internet, and then it is distributed as Wi-Fi to your devices.
I’ve installed four of these for friends and clients, and they are very good.

Can you set up the base station to bridge over and use your own wifi router? That's usually the solution to crappy ISP/Cableco gear.

RgrF,
We have been wanting to send Spectrum packing, too but Frontier FIOS is dragging its feet. Only offers service to sporadic sections in our neighborhood.
The TMobile router is 5 from the windows of our upstairs home office/library. Nothing is obstructing it. Placing it right next to the window sill it'd melt away on a hot day!
The MacBookPro wifi list displays TMobile router. Still the laptop not establishing a connection even though the 2 devices are 2 feet a part.

Kap

Check the T-Mobile set-up site. Once you click through it should show you which tower is feeding you also shows the directional pattern. In our case the signal was coming in from N/NE so we located to a window nearest that direction.

Could also be that T-Mobile is focusing build out in densely populated metro areas.
