PSA: Air filters do not last forever - deckeda - 05-30-2022 The other week I selected a lawn mower from the shed, mowed about 1/2 hour then I stopped to do something else. I come back to complete the mowing, its starts on the first pull and I'm mowing for 30 seconds before the engine stops. Won't start. Of course I had just refilled it with gas. And yes we only ever use enthanol-free here, I pull off the air cleaner cover and 1/4 of the air filter is ... missing. No evidence of mice (and they can't get into the air cleaner.) *** I remove the carb and spray it down. Looks OK --- zero evident of paper --- reinstall, will not start. I pull the spark plug and it's dry. After all that pulling and pulling of the recoil and the spark plug is dry. Fuel made it into the fuel bowl, just not out. Float and needle valve seem fine. Today disassemble the carb, take out jet and emulsion tube, and idle circuit plug and spray it all out. Upon reassembly and several pulls, it fires up. *** I'm considering buying a motorcycle this summer that has a carburetor. I might need an intervention. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - Acer - 05-30-2022 I was reminded of this on my lawn mower just last summer. My son was complaining it was running rough, stalling, etc. Naturally I blamed bad gas. When it persisted, I finally sat down to look, and egads, the air filter was well and truly clogged. Addressed that and the mower was its old self again. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - Yoyodyne ArtWorks - 05-30-2022 For many motorcycles, rebuilding the carbs isn’t as aggravating as getting at the carbs and removing them for the cleaning procedure. An ultrasonic cleaner certainly helps the latter, as well as buying new jets rather than trying to clean out the tiny openings in clogged jets. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - Numo - 05-30-2022 My wife wants to buy a push mower. I’ve heard they don’t have carburetor problems. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - cbelt3 - 05-30-2022 Battery push mowers … my Home Despot does not sell any gasoline operated push / self propelled mowers. I bought a fuel injected garden tractor so I would not have to deal with carburetors. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - testcase - 05-30-2022 "My wife wants to buy a push mower. As long as your wife does the pushing, sounds like a plan........ :boink: Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - deckeda - 05-30-2022 Yoyodyne ArtWorks wrote: Jets and emulsion tubes don't bother me. You can either see daylight through them or you can't. It's the hidden passages that need an extra blast of carb cleanser or brake cleaner. I was also tasked with getting a '95 Kawasaki Bayou 220 running. It's a 4-wheel motorcycle (ATV). I learned that the air/fuel screw on that Mikuni is located under the carb. You have to remove the air box and the carb to adjust. It's been a headache but I haven't given up yet. 1 cyl machines are the easiest, but sorta like EFI in that stuff either works or it doesn't. The disadvantage is there's no code telling you what's wrong. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - mrbigstuff - 05-31-2022 Yeah, rebuilding carbs is not difficult, and I find it satisfying. Now syncing carbs.... Hahaha. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - RAMd®d - 05-31-2022 I did a lot of work on my 750-4's carb when I modified the airbox and exhaust, resulting in some very lean plug readings. Instead of restoring the air intake and exhaust, and not wanting holes in pistons, I elected to tune the carbs to give a proper throttle response and good plug readings. Pulling and reinstalling the carbs was the most difficult part, sure. But after a few of those evolutions, it became tedious. Raise four needles, buy new high speed jets, adjust idle jets, replace idle jets, make spaces for needles because whole increments of moving the circlips wasn't enough or was excessive. I now have a bike with FI, and I'll be fine with that. Re: PSA: Air filters do not last forever - ArtP - 05-31-2022 Hmmm, I think I have a craftsman mower. My "GoTo" for blades, starter capsules, and etc was Sear brick and mortar stores but they are all gone now. Where do you order a lawnmower air filter nowadays? |
