They have their priorities straight - funneling at least part of that money to an All American, NFL Hall of Fame football player and favorite son Bret Farve while paying a football coach more than any other state employee.
Asking for 'go fund me' from out-of-state neighbors to help get clean, drinkable water to citizens of their largest city, something they apparently cannot themselves afford to do.

While that is true (in 2015 is 39 sets the highest paid employee was either the football or basketball coach), the majority of their salary is not from tax money. Coaches are often the same salary scale as any university employee, but then get a huge additional stipend paid by the school's athletic foundation - that money comes from corporate sponsorships, television revenue, and boosters. It is not from tuition or taxes.

The wife went to college in Alabama. She said they used to say Thank God for Mississippi, or we’d be on the bottom of all those lists.

PS - This is an example of the problems with states demanding they get Federal money as “block grants”.

They need to separate football and basketball from Athletics.
Those need to be under Promotion and Advertising.
