Magic Mouse Acting Up Again - mrlynn - 11-08-2022

Last year my Magic Mouse began having trouble moving the cursor:

I finally bought a new one, and that's been working fine—until recently. Now it too is not tracking properly. Finger-tip scrolling works fine, but the cursor is not obeying.

I've been using the Mouse on a traditional cloth mouse pad, as my old table top is kinda ragged and rough. When it doesn't respond properly I blow on the opening, and that helps for a bit, but then stops following. It actually works better on the table alone, for a while. Is there a surface these devices like better? I've tried paper, and file folders, and they don't work. A shot of compressed air settles it down, but not for long.

Reminds me of the old ball-type mouses (mice?); you had to take out the ball and clean it. Can I open up the Magic Mouse?

I have a Magic Mouse that lagged like crazy. Then I realized my M1 Mini was in the adjacent closet, behind a wall with a big sheet metal vent inside.

I got a cheap little USB bluetooth adapter from Bezosville (free returns), plugged it into one of the USB slots on my (old Apple 24”) monitor (no drivers needed) and the problem disappeared.

YMMV, obviously, depending on your layout, but it might be worth a try.

Interesting. There's nothing between my iMac and the mouse, though. But I suppose there could be a problem with Bluetooth. I've never had any confidence in that system. The radio mousies with USB receptors seem to do much better.

Try a different mouse pad.

Re: Magic Mouse Acting Up Again - A-Polly - 11-08-2022

I had the same problem. Using a rougher mousepad (actually the cover of my iPad) helped for a while, but eventually discovered that cleaning the bottom with a fine microfiber cloth made all the difference. The little rails on the bottom looked and felt perfectly clean but apparently weren't. Occasionally I dampen the cloth slightly but it isn't usually necessary. Even a clean paper napkin helps if that's what I have at hand when needed. I'm careful to wipe the sides as well as the bottoms of the rails.

I hope your issue will be solved by something simple as well. Confusedmiley-signs003:

I was going to suggest the same as A-Polly except for on the lenses- Fine microfiber cloth or a Q-tip, very lightly moistened.

OK to use alcohol?

No, alcohol is not recommended, per Apple. At most, slightly dampen the cloth with water. And :agree: with TS Scott: check the lens, too. May need some dust blown off, or the Qtip if some filth is stuck. But I haven't had to go that far yet.

Sounds like the mouse pad is shedding. Can you still find those things new or are they all leftovers?
