There are getting to be lots of black bears in parts of Arkansas.

Don't corner them, and don't threaten (or look like you're threatening) their cubs.... otherwise, you can yell at them and they'll run away.
They're not brave, and not terribly dangerous - unless they're backed into a corner, you threaten their cubs, or you surprise them (and they feel cornered).

At least, their California cousins are that way.

I mean, I wouldn't want to try picking a fight with one on purpose to see if he runs, but, I've scared a number of them off when I lived more in the country than I do now.

They can kill you, just as dead as a Grizzly will...

It depends on which is in staring you down.

Just don’t give it any cocaine.

What Paul F said.

The only thing I would add is that they will also protect high calorie food items. In camp grounds, folks who try to get their camp cooler back are not always rewarded. When bears get a taste for human foods they can be more difficult. That's why wildlife managers haul them off to the wilderness.

It's hardly worth mentioning. For every incident in that report, there are literally 1000s of interactions that do not get violent. That includes people doing very stupid things.

I've seen bears in the wild a dozen times maybe. The only times they did not run for their lives the very moment they realized I was near was when they were eating (not my food).

I’ve seen bears in the wild hundreds of times; usually they ran, but not always.

I watched a black bear start to stalk my girlfriend.

Another black bear that came several times into a place I was caretaking was later shot coming through a window of a camper in which two people were sleeping.

Saying that black bears are not dangerous is like saying dogs are not dangerous.

Sometimes it is true. Not always.
