Flying. Should I put some AirTags in my luggage? - gadje - 02-25-2023

Flying for work soon (domestic) and I was thinking to put an AirTag in my checked luggage and one in my backpack. I should always have possession of the backpack, so maybe that is not necessary, but why not? I have several unused AirTags.

any risk this could trigger some TSA device and actually make things worse?

How will you turn them off for take-off and landing? Confusedmiley-excited001:

I've done this for all of my recent flights. When my luggage missed the connection a few months back, it was nice to know where it was.

Definitely try one out in your checked bag

Your backpack? Probably not unless you're prone to forgetting it somewhere or paranoid that someone may swipe it off your back and run off with it

Thanks. Since I have several that I don't use, I'll put one in checked luggage (*) and one in Backpack.

* non stop flight, so hopefully less change of luggage getting lost.

I don't know much about AirTags but from what I read they are intended for helping to find lost items not stolen items. Is that the case and is there another reason besides possible danger if confronting a thief that they are not recommended for retrieving stolen goods?

It's about managing expectations. AirTags are designed to notify people if they are in proximity to a person and not the owner (to "prevent" stalking). Thus, the thief might be notified that the stolen item has an AirTag in it and they might find and dispose of/destroy the AirTag.

Also, there really is very little precision to the AirTags actual location (once the AirTag has disconnected from your phone and been moved). Image if the thief made it home to a multi-story apartment building. You might only know that your item is in the building, with no idea what floor, or even what unit. Precision finding really only works once you're in the same room as the AirTag.
