preferred picture storage/Lightroom/Photoshop external hard drive/naked drive 10-12-14Tb range? - robfilms - 03-01-2023

i am in the process of consolidating image drives to be used with Lightroom/Photoshop.

these will ONLY be used to access/edit/store digital images.

these WILL NOT be used as video drives. (so no need for 7200rpm)

i am guessing that i currently have 6-8tb of digital material.

i am guessing that within the next 2-3 years i'll need 10-12-14tb of storage.

i am currently on a late 2015 loaded i7 27" imac.

i am guessing that i am eventually headed to mac mini or mac studio.

what is the current preferred large desktop drive or naked drive or are they really all the same, Western Digital vs Seagate vs Toshiba?

as always, thanks in advance.

rob

Not a fan of Seagate anymore.

I think you mean TB, not GB.

I've stayed away from Seagate since the debacle 10-15 years ago. Mostly using WD. I recently had a Hitachi die, but in all fairness, it was almost 12 years old and was in a machine that basically ran 24/7. I have a Toshiba in it that's probably about the same age. No problems with it yet. All my drives get backed up often. My WD drives are newer and no problems with them yet either.

WD was putting their Red drives in their Elements external drives several years ago. Both of the ones I shucked were Reds. I think I heard they stopped doing that now though.

I just got one of these 14TB internals, which I think is probably the best bang for the buck: https://serverpartdeals.com/products/western-digital-ultrastar-dc-hc530-wuh721414ale6l4-0f31284-14tb-7-2k-rpm-sata-6gb-s-512e-512mb-3-5-se-manufacturer-recertified-hdd

But that's internal so if you don't have a case or an adapter to put it in (or a Mac Pro) and you want an external then maybe this: https://slickdeals.net/f/16475926-16tb-wd-elements-usb-3-0-desktop-external-hard-drive-240?src=jfy&prop=rcmid-2bac8fc2bd02e9d4a4c87afa7b3ac33a

There were some other better deals on externals recently but they're expired.

By the way, I'm also in the "no Seagate" camp.
