Migration Assistant question(s) - rz - 03-01-2023 I am slooooowly moving from my trusty Mac Pro 5,1 to a Mac Studio. I decided that I was going to start fresh with the Studio, so I didn't use MA. I setup a user account (same name as on my 5,1) and either purchased new versions of software, or downloaded/installed new versions of free stuff like Firefox, VLC, etc. The 5,1 basically was migrated from my 3,1 which in turn was probably migrated from my G5. There's stuff from like 2001 on there. Anyway, there's a few things I haven't moved over and am trying to decide the best way to do it. Firefox is the biggie. I've got some add-ons and lots of bookmarks. I want to try to recreate what I have now onto the Studio. Little Snitch is the next one... I contacted them and they said I can copy over my rules. I'm running an old version on my 5,1 and would be buying the latest version. I don't use Safari a lot, but there's probably some stuff there too. The last biggies are iTunes and Photos. I have some stuff in Photos, but I don't really use it. I think it automatically converted an old iPhoto library. I assume I can just copy it over. iTunes is another big question I have. I know they've gone to Apple Music. I have like a 250+GB iTunes library. I also used it to backup my iPhones and iPads. Can you use Apple Music to do backups? I don't like using iCloud. Their "free" space is way too small to backup anything, and I hate paying a monthly fee for such a chintzy amount of space. So, I'm trying to decide how to move the above stuff over. Is it too late to use MA? Re: Migration Assistant question(s) - Fritz - 03-01-2023 Firefox has a sync function which works great. You need to make yourself a Firefox acct. VLC just install the latest. Photos should copy as long as it's Photos and not iPhotos. As I remember (going from a 2013 MBA on HS), when I launched Photos for the first time on my minIntel, it converted the old library fairly quick and seamlessly. I imported my old library from iTunes to Music with no major issues. Music doesn't do b.ups. My lib is like 1.5TB on 2 drives and iDrive cloud. If you look around you may still be able to find iDrive for $8/1st year for 5TB. I switched from Backblaze to it and have switched a client to it as well. So far, a year or so in, good. MA allows you to pick and choose, so you should be able to get what you want. The only issues I had from the MBA to the minIntel was Mac Mail. MA was taking too long for my patience. So I d&d'd to the minIntel and dealt with it there. It took some thought, but it's all good now. Also, if your studio is Monty, stay there. I've had some issues with clients Macs that updated to Venty. YMMD Re: Migration Assistant question(s) - rich in distress - 03-02-2023 Kudos on starting fresh! Few thoughts on iCloud: the free tier is mostly for syncing data. Paid options are for backing up devices. Hard drive space on new computers is very fast, and expensive. So it makes sense to me, to pay for the convenience of automatic backups that do not clutter my hard drive. Same with music. I synced my library to Music.app and when I got a new 128gb computer, I thought I would migrate the library to an external that I would connect when I needed the computer interface for music. That day still has not come, and I have my music on any device I have, and it uses no expensive drive space. At any rate, just have your photos and music folders available, and import from there. No migration needed. Safari should be able to sync with the right settings (@settings/icloud). Good luck! Re: Migration Assistant question(s) - rz - 03-02-2023 Fritz wrote: Thanks. I actually moved over my Mac Mail a few months ago. It didn't go quite as smoothly as I'd hoped, but it worked (basically it combined all the mail from two different accounts into one folder. No big deal). I've heard bad things about Ventura, so I'm planning on staying on Monterrey for now. I'll check into that Firefox sync function. |
