Corel releases Painter X - laarree - 02-06-2007
Saw this at maccentral.com this am.

Universal Binary, but its upgrade from previous versions is a bit pricy--$219.
I used to use Painter alot years ago, but have barely touched Painter 8, the
last upgrade I purchased. They do have a trial version, which I am downloading...

Checking out the link now, although I am sure my ancient Macs could not possibly run this latest version.
Seems I need a G4 and I am still firmly in G3 land. Being four chip generations behind has proven to be continuously enjoyable when it comes time to reading system requirements.
Otherwise, the requirements don't seem too steep, although I am sure faster and more is always better.

Version X? I'm up to X-5. Runs fine on my G5 tower.

IX is buggy & slow, although it does what it does better than anything.
I've said it before, I want Adobe to buy it & Adobe-ize it.
I ordered X, maybe I'll get the "limited Edition Paint Can" too. whoo hoo.

Version X as in the tenth version after versions 1,2,3,4, etc. -- Painter has run on
MacOS X for a while now, so its is a slightly confusing way of naming it..
I just installed the demo -- it runs fine on my trusty dual MDD G4, although it seemed
very slow until I turned off the Enhanced Brush Ghost general preference.

I hear ya about wishing it would get Adobe-ized. Photoshop's recent generation
Painterish-brush options don't work as well as I hoped, not that I need to use
those features very often.
I did have Painter way back in the day when it originally shipped in a paint can.
It was the first great reason to get a Wacom tablet.

My only concern is that I've only scratched the surface with version IX. Unless there's something I can't live without, I'll wait until after I get a new Mac before upgrading. I'll check out the trial download and watch for reviews.

IX-5 is a free upgrade and adds "Painting Palletes" which is AWESOME. No longer are you limited to a handful of brushes to do 'auto clone". The set of 3 palletes will let you choose just about any brush, set opacity, size, jitter etc. then auto paint with it. Stop when you want, adjust the brush or pick a new one and auto paint on. Then use the soft cloner to add back details.
Scott Kelby's Photoshop TV podcast had a special guest, Fay Sirkis, who did a demo on this feature last month. Check it out. I think you will be impressed enough to download the free upgrade.
