Would you buy a 16GB USB flash drive? - will2000 - 02-06-2007
They are pricey, but I am considering buying one of these thumb drives to keep a lot of files on. I have 2 one-giggers, and use them frequently, also a 60 FW800 drive, but sometimes I don't want to carry any notebook, and a higher capacity thumb drive seems like the way to go.
Anybody else doing this or thinking about it?

WHen they drop below $75? Sure...
Until then, nope. Had too many smaller ones lose their magic smoke... never to mount again.
If that happened with an expensive 16gb one, I'd be unhappy.

just drill a tiny hole, pours some of this in, and tape it up.

I'm with Paul F. on this one. I've had some flakey drives that have died on me, and I wouldn't keep anything that wasn't backed up elsewhere on one. However, I will think about them when the price drops so I can put an OS X partition on one for using as an alternate way of booting up machines.

That's a good point I hadn't considered. My flash drives are old but work fine.
I like the idea of a OSX volume on a flash drive.

I would have far more faith in a huge CF card in a card reader for some reason.

Yes.
Corsair brands (16GB) can be had for around $170 to $199.
Pretty cheap, considering that was the 4GB price not long ago.

Why not just go with a 2.5" USB 2 drive? Probably cheaper than a flash-based one.

I will definitely buy one - when they drop to $25.
I am Itching for a 4GB currently.
