Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - samintx - 02-07-2007 I think it might be concerning but I wish they woudl do something on cell phones in the car ! Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - mattkime - 02-07-2007 Yes, yes, freakin' yes! Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - silvarios - 02-07-2007 Probably fair. However, I often wear earbuds in my ears while driving. My iPod or iAudio is often sitting in my pocket while I am out an about and when I get in the car I'm too lazy to take the earbuds off. Mind you, I think I would be fine legally, because the devices are turned off and I usually only leave one earbud in, using the single ear as a placeholder for the buds. Probably looks like a cellular hands free set from the distance. I do think it silly to listen to earphones while driving, but not that much more outrageous than cranking the automobile's audio system up so loud that you cannot hear either. Nathan Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - blusubaru - 02-07-2007 It's say it's not fair. $101 fine? That's not nearly fair enough. I believe it's against the law here in Indiana, though I'm not sure what the penalty is. What kind of idiot wears headphones while driving a car!? Ear buds or over the ear, it doesn't matter. Along the same principle then, extremely loud audio systems, front seat DVD players, cell phones... all should be banned while driving because you can't hear what's going on around you. We got a decent amount of snow yesterday. Central Indiana came to a crawl. I was fortunate enough to avoid a SERIOUS car accident because I was alert and watching my mirrors. A car went by me on the right, sideways, I moved over behind him in time to miss a minivan coming sideways to my left, on the interstate. Both must have been stuck in their little bubbles because they failed to see what was going on in front of them. Absolutely. Especially when you *know* it's illegal. - RAMd®d - 02-07-2007 ...but not that much more outrageous than cranking the automobile's audio system up so loud that you cannot hear either. I don't agree. First I see it as more as dangerous than outrageous. Second, I think having sound play "inside your head" is far different than "blasting" the car speakers. I think the degree of isolation is far greater and much more distracting. Is this question another in the Magpie Series? Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - what4 - 02-07-2007 Depends. Listening to low-volume buds can leave you better able to hear traffic sounds than having the windows up and the car stereo on high. Especially if they are noise-canceling. Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - SteveJobs - 02-07-2007 deaf people shouldn't drive EITHER!!! ![]() Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - RAMd®d - 02-07-2007 Especially if they are noise-canceling. Don't count too much on that. That only works on steady state sounds. The steady blare of a horn warning you that you're stepping in front of a big truck that you didn't bother to look for could be attentuated, much to your regret. The comparison of deaf people to those how impair their hearing is specious, at best. It *could* be accurate in a very specific situation, but the generalization is misleading. Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - ka jowct - 02-07-2007 Driving with either very loud music [laying in the car or while wearing headphones is not a good idea. Earbuds would be less annooying to others, but it is bound to interfere with a driver's concentration. Rolling boomboxes are even worse: they impair the driver's ability to concentrate AND they annoy the crap out of others when they drive up to a red light and sit there blasting crap out into the neighborhood. Re: Do you think a fine is fair for wearing buds? - davester - 02-07-2007 It's ridiculous (and illegal here) to wear headphones, earbuds, etc while driving (or riding a bike). It will be illegal to use a cell phone handset in a few months (not soon enough IMHO). I avoid cell phone use in the car, but for the few occasions I do (i.e. straight highway, no intersections), this system works really well for me http://www.blueant.com.au/supertooth2.htm . The level of distraction doesn't seem any different than talking with a passenger. |
