ACROSS THE STREET that is...

A state senator from Brooklyn said on Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation that would ban people from using an MP3 player, cell phone, Blackberry or any other electronic device while crossing the street in either New York City or Buffalo.

NewsChannel 4 reported that Sen. Carl Kruger is proposing the ban in response to two recent pedestrian deaths in his district, including a 23-year-old man who was struck and killed last month while listening to his iPod on Avenue T and East 71st Street In Bergen Beach.

"While people are tuning into their iPods and cell phones, they're tuning out the world around them," Kruger said. The proposed law would make talking on cell phones while crossing the street a comparable offense to jaywalking.

Some pedestrians said they were not worried about their safety while using their electronic devices while walking.

"I look for the light," said Venus Montes of Williamsburg.

"I'm still looking," said Lance Gordon of Far Rockaway. "It's not like I'm not paying attention."

Others said the proposed ban would not work.

"I don't think anyone's going to be up for this," said Patricia Lewis of Staten Island. "I don't think anyone wants this."

Other pedestrians said they thought the proposal was a good idea.

"It's too dangerous," said Nicole Lake of Jersey City. "Drivers don't pay attention and pedestrians don't pay attention."

"Several other pedestrians were questioned, mostly quoted as replying "Huh? What? I can't hear you" or just flat out ignoring the interviewer."

Ok, that's not really in there.

The government's job is not to protect people from themselves.

The way I see it is if people want to walk across the street wearing headphones, and are subsequently killed doing so, it's just a form of natural selection.

The ban is for only crossing the street. In thirty years of runningI have never used a earphone device because I am afraid of traffic. Here in San Jose on N.st. with heavy commute traffic I admire bicyclists because the bike lanes are not covering the route very much. The ones who wear earbuds I shake my head. This is vicious traffic. Crossing the street as a pedestrian is no picnic either. Stepping off the curb with traffic some cars think they can continue on while the light changes. You cannot see the turners.

Some cars think they can continue on without stopping even while the light changes. You cannot see the turners.

And, of course, deaf people are not allowed to walk across the street in New York and Buffalo ?

I wonder at what point someone is going to point out the logical inconsistency to this nimrod. We keep trying to get Government to act in loco parentis, and all we get is a loco parent.

Comparing deafness to isolating oneself by playing music via headphones is not an accurate comparison by any means.

Barring legislation which won't be actively enforced anyway, an airhorn usually overpowers just about any earphone/player combo.

I believe it *is* the governments job to protect people from themselves, and especially to protect us from those people who fail to protect themselves.

The idea of picking stupid people out of my grille is not appealing.

I work with two deaf people in Buffalo and neither one walks around with earbuds while driving or crossing the street.

That cracked me up.

To be fair, there were only two people killed in that instance. Usually traffic lights near residential areas require more deaths before the municipalities act. (Your mileage may very.)

So the Senator is clearly over reacting.

Why not just ban cars.
Then no one can get hit anywhere.

Without blocked ears is a guarantee they'd pay attention otherwise ?

Sorry for the losses, but they didn't have eyes ?
And a bit of self-preservational tendencies ?
