How long should a repaired LCD monitor last? - mattkime - 02-07-2007

I work for someone that has a large number of older Apple LCDs in their office and they've had two blink out on them in the past two months. In one case its the bulbs and in another case I believe its the inverter. How long are the displays likely to last after they've been fixed?

Like tires, you can run over a nail at any time.

Electronic parts can stress and be near failure and go at any time.
Repairs and subsequent repairs can be related and/or coincidence.
Some times it's hard to prove/anticipate.

I used to repair TVs and other electronic gear. I felt that if I could get more service out of them and keep the landfill issues down, I was doing a good thing. Most of the time those items failed withing a couple months because it was something else that was stressing the initially detected failed item so it would happen again...and again. I was dumb enough to try my favorite 27" TV with built-in Amp Twice....I'm cured of that now.

Sadly electronics are mostly disposable today. The repair costs (and lack of any assurance the repair will stay fixed beyond a few months) makes it uneconomical. In the case of displays a new 22" LCD can be had for $400, probably about what it would cost to repair an older 22".
