Is it possible to convert an avi to wmv on a mac?

Check out the paid versions of Flip4Mac http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm. Cheapest version won't, however.

The base program won't as far as I can tell. Are you perhaps saying that QT Pro will do it if you can find a third-party plugin that will do the translation for it?

I started my QT Pro, opened an avi ( little move shot on my digital camera) and pulled down the File menu to Export. This gave me various options one of which was Movie to Windows Media which gave me a new file ending in .wmv. From that I assumed that QT Pro could convert an avi to wmv. Not sure if it found something else on my computer to help do the job but that's what I did to see if it worked for me.

You probably have flip4mac installed. When you do that and you click the options button, does a window pop up that says "flip4mac trial?"
