Why do songs sound quite different in different apps? - tuqqer - 02-07-2007
I've got some .aiff files that I've polished in Sound Studio (v3). Playing them in Sound Studio, and then playing them in iTunes (still the same .aiff file, not a mp3 of it), they sound quite different. I'd call it brigher, with more highs.
Does iTunes do something to audio files by default? Why the radical difference in sound?

I'm not sure about Sound Studio as I've never used it, but iTunes uses a bullt-in equilizer. There are also settings for automatic volume adjustment in iTunes that may affect the sound output.

itunes has a audio enhancer that is on by default - you can turn it off in the prefs

Do both applications hook into the same decoder backend? I think we can assume iTunes uses QuickTime. What is Sound Studio using to decode the files?
