PC3200 1GB RAM comparison - Joey Cupcakes - 02-08-2007
Some good prices right now for 1GB PC3200 RAM sticks. Comparing these three- http://www.chiefvalue.com/product-_-ProductCompare.cv_-_Category--147&CompareItemList--20-145-505,20-609-049,20-141-198 -, anybody have experience with these brands in a 2GHz revB G5? Corsair has a good rep, but this is their "Value" brand, and I'm unfamiliar with PQI or Super Talent.
Also, how likely is it that 2 (of the same brand, of course) may not work well as the "matched pair" required by the G5?

You can buy Kingston brand for those prices. Just say no to no-name RAM.

Thanks Elmo, but Corsair is hardly a "no name" brand, and I've had problems in the past with Kingston's bargain-line label. The only question for me is whether Corsair's "value" line might have similar problems.
If good-normal pricing weren't an issue, I'd buy OWC anyway, but we're talking about savings of $100 for 4 sticks.

We're not as cheap as the cheapest on that link... but our top notch stuff, guaranteed matched and right for Mac and not overclocked is about $12.50 more per module than the cheapest... about $50 more for 4 sticks that will work and are backed with no hassles.

Plus shipping, but still not much more to get quality RAM from a company you can trust.

I put a 512MB value stick from Corsair in my wife's G5 iMac last year. The price was right from Fry's but the iMac didn't like it. Developed lots of errors and hiccups. Ended up having to back everything up, reformat the hard drive and start over. Evidently, her computer only wanted the official stuff.
I did pick up an extra 512MB stick on craigslist last week for $20, though, so she is back up to 1Gig.

Yeah, I see that, Larry... The price has actually come down a bit recently, and for that difference you're absolutely right. I've used OWC RAM most of the time since I had an PPC8500 and always steer my clients to you. Guess I should follow my own advice!
The real reason I'm tempted to cheap out a bit is because my G5 is fully populated with 512MB sticks, and to upgrade I not only have to buy the 1GB sticks but get little value back on the RAM I'm removing to make room for them.
