Real ID reqirements - freeradical - 07-06-2023
Wasn't it supposed to be mandatory this year?
The date has been pushed back many times now.
The latest new date is May 7, 2025.
IMHO, if they can keep pushing the date back like they do, then "Real ID" must not be all that important.

It mostly messes up people living in poverty without access to stuff like birth certificates or passports, and women who have to demonstrate a legal name-change from their marriage.

This is true. Unhoused are particularly challenged.

Very easy to get the Real ID when you renew or update your license, can be done online in most states. About half of all US ID holders have it already.
The bigger challenge is a passport. Up to 13 weeks waiting time.

There is provision for those who may not have the required documents in hand to obtain them. Details vary by state and I can't speak to how easy or difficult it may be in any particular state. A Florida law just went into effect this week that will not recognize driver's licenses from five states (Rhode Island, Conn, Delaware, Hawaii, and Vermont) because they allow undocumented aliens to have a license.
I'm expecting selective enforcement.

yep, I'm-a gonna try to renew my driver's license online this year like I did before.
and worry about real id the next go-round.
since I already have a current passport book & card.
